Another Side Tours CBS 8 Story

CBS 8 ComicCon Parade

Could there soon be a Comic-Con parade? Posted: Jan 07, 2011 12:34 PM Updated: Jan 08, 2011 11:18 AM By Jeff Zevely

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - As if the people-watching at Comic-Con wasn't already entertaining enough, there could soon be a parade to kick off Comic-Con festivities in San Diego.

It's an idea San Diego City Council President Tony Young decided to float to the public.

"You know, if we did a Comic-Con Parade the day before Comic-Con opens then people will come from all over the world a day early," Young said.

Young says the four-day event goes by in such a blur why not give downtown businesses a boost with an extra day of spending at hotels and restaurants.

Erin Belanger from Another Side Tours says a possible parade has her financial wheels turning.

"I think that sounds fantastic. Nothing would better than another day of Comic-Con in San Diego. Everybody loves a parade, I mean look at what it does for the community everybody get excited businesses get involved," Belanger said.

A parade could further boost local businesses like Crunch Time, which sells popcorn, ice cream and hot dogs.

"If they do a parade down here we will do free Coke floats for everyone in that parade," Crunch Time owner David Pinkney said.

David and Kim Pinkney say Comic-Con is their busiest time of the year, and a parade would pad their pockets.

Comic-Con organizers say they have not been approached by the City of San Diego but they are open to the idea. City officials would love Comic-Con's parade input but say they don't need Comic-Con's blessing to host a parade.

City leaders say Comic-Con sells out every year so a parade would allow every San Diegan to get in on the fun. Tony Young told News 8 it's probably too optimistic to get the parade up and running by this July but 2012 is looking good.

NBC LA: The New High-Tech Way to Tour LA

The New High Tech Way To Tour LA

"It gets somebody out from behind the glass on a tour bus."

Tourists and locals alike are skipping the tour bus in favor of a new high-tech way to see the sights around town: the Segway.

"It gets somebody out from behind the glass on a tour bus where they can really breathe and take in the air," says Kenneth Lippman, owner of Another Side Tours.

The Segway is a contraption that, at first glance, looks like it would never work. But through some high tech magic, the two-wheeled mechanical wonder can hold a person upright and cruise down the streets around 12 miles per hour.

"It really becomes part of your body," Lippman explains. "I think people are amazed we can stroll down Rodeo Drive in style."

Lippman's company specializes in taking guests on up-close, reach-out-and-touch tours of LA's top destinations including Beverly Hills, downtown Los Angeles, the La Brea Tar Pits, and along the beach.

Jean Neuweg decided to give it a try. She escaped the cold winter storms of Iowa to meet her daughter Sarah McDaniel in Los Angeles for some fun.

After a short training session to get her sea legs, she was off and running.

"I was kind of gawking around and hit a bush but kept on moving," Neuweg joked. "But it was amazing."

The Coolest Thing To Do In Beverly Hills

The Coolest Thing To Do in Beverly Hills

SHE’s been in the US of A in the last month, researching the best places to visit and the coolest things to do for our trip this time next year. A first time visitor to America, SHE was dazzled by the friendliness of the locals – yes…really! Don’t be too quick to brand all Americans as loud, gregarious people who travel the world on cruise ships (with all due respect) – they’re not all like that (just as we Aussies are not all like the Bintang-wearing Bogans who travel the world giving us a bad name!).

Rating as one of the coolest things SHE got amongst during a stay in Los Angeles was a Segway tour through Beverly Hills. Our group were first time Segway riders – a little nervous, a touch apprehensive. After a safety demonstration, some expert guidance, and practice in the carpark, our confidence increased and we headed off in single file through Beverly Hills. Segways are licensed to be ridden on the sidewalk in America – how cool is that? They’re incredibly easy to ride, require little skill and limited training. They’re easy to manoeuvre and they ‘turn on a dime’ (and that’s a neat trick once your confidence increases!)

We glided down the palm-lined streets of Beverly Hills, past the houses of the rich and famous, and along Robertson Street for glimpses in boutiques and celebrity eateries. The highlight, without a doubt, was gliding along Rodeo Drive – absolutely awesome! SHE was surprised how forgiving the locals were…people happily moved out of our way as we rolled slowly down the centre of the sidewalk. Many joked with us that it was the best way to travel, and not one person was angry or upset with us. Can’t honestly say that SHE thinks it would be the same if we rolled through Bourke St Mall in Melbourne on a Friday afternoon!

The people at Another Side of Los Angeles Tour were fantastic: helpful, accommodating, patient, excellent teachers and knowledgeable guides. Our guide somehow managed to not only navigate her way through busy streets, but keep an eye on us at the same time – and she gave those of us who were feeling confident a chance to pick up the pace a little once we reached a quieter area – big fun! Some simple hand gestures and clear communication made this trip a stress-free experience. Thanks guys! SHE loved it and SHE’ll be back!
